Joe Deere is the Cherokee Nation Councilor for District 13, Joe was just reelected to a second term and won at an overwhelming 80%. District 13 represents Tulsa and Sperry as well as parts of Catoosa, Owasso, Skiatook and Collinsville.
Joe believes that to help safeguard and strengthen the sovereignty of the Cherokee Nation within its Reservation and beyond, partnerships that create communication and
cooperation must be formed with all that live on the Cherokee Reservation, Native and non-Native alike
.
Joe’s vision for his district is creating community, which he has diligently worked on by fighting for the citizenship rights of Freedmen, creating three new community groups, building a new clinic (here), and adding three food distribution sites within his district’s boundaries (here). Councilor Deere has been recently asked to speak across the country about cases such as McGirt, Bracheen,MMIP and how these cases affect Indian country.
Joe was honored to be named one of the Tulsa World’s, “People to Watch 2021”. Joe was also honored to be named the Grand Marshal of the 2022 Tulsa Martin Luther King, Jr. parade.
Within his first two years on Council, Joe was appointed to the Greater Tulsa Area Indian Affairs Commission, as a commissioner and was soon thereafter voted in as the Chair. He was also appointed to the board of the Tulsa Area United Way, Tulsa Air and Space Museum, to the Board of Education for Catoosa Public Schools (one term), to the Food on the Move board, to the Historic Black Towns and Settlements Alliance, and to the Board of the Owasso Family YMCA. Joe attends St. Pius X Catholic
Church in Tulsa, and is an active member of the local Knights of Columbus Council. Joe uses his time with the Knights to volunteer at a high level for causes such as the Special Olympics, Knights for Autism, and the Go Life Campaign. As the past District Deputy of the Knights of Columbus, Joe is proud of his implemented integration policy within the Catholic brotherhood to create community between all cultures.
Joe’s most recent accomplishment is finishing his Master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Law in Indigenous Law, December 2022. Joe says that finishing this degree will help him to better understand the intricacies dealing with Tribal law in order to protect the Cherokee Nation,
its sovereignty and its people, through proper legislation.
Joe was recently elected to represent Eastern Region area Vice President for NCAI by acclamation that represents 20 federally recognized tribes.
